[00:00:02] Speaker A: Hey, parents and coaches, are your kids using the right glove? The most important skill for youth athletes to learn is how to play proper catch. The problem is most youth gloves are made with bad leather and are too big for small hands. They actually make it harder to play catch. That's why former Major League Baseball shortstop Kevin Smith created Cali Gloves. Cali gloves are crafted from 100% Japanese kip leather and are the perfect size for kids.
All Cali gloves come with palm slits, finger loops and elastic wrist lacing that
[00:00:38] Speaker B: encourage proper hand placement.
[00:00:40] Speaker A: The right closing patterns and give kids more confidence to go make plays. Cali Gloves even allow parents to break in the glove without stretching out the fit.
It's the glove Kevin wishes he had growing up and the glove all his teammates want for their kids. Visit caligloves.com to learn more and help your kids play better catch.

[00:01:10] Speaker C: welcome to this week's edition of in the Clubhouse with DMD Baseball. I'm here to kira Kitties, joined by my Wonderful Co host, Mr. Keith Glasser. How we doing?
[00:01:18] Speaker D: Great. How are you?
[00:01:19] Speaker C: You're blue.
Mighty blue. With flip the hat around for the people watching because sick Giants lid I got. Yeah. You may not be a Giants fan, but if you don't like that hat, you probably need to check your pulse.
[00:01:33] Speaker D: It was. I got it on sale for $15.
[00:01:37] Speaker C: That's patience rewarded.
[00:01:40] Speaker B: I'd been eyeing it for a while
[00:01:41] Speaker D: and it was like $45. And I said, there's not a hat in the world I will pay that much money for.
And then it went on sale for $15. And I said, discipline equals freedom.
[00:01:53] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:01:53] Speaker D: And I went ahead and bought that
[00:01:55] Speaker C: hashtag Jocko Willink shout out.
[00:01:58] Speaker D: So I was disciplined enough to. To not bite that, to not pull the trigger a long time ago. And when it came down to 15, I said, Bam, that's mine.
[00:02:08] Speaker C: I like it.
[00:02:09] Speaker D: Which in quick math, I think is about 66% off.
[00:02:14] Speaker C: Yeah, roughly.
Roughly, yeah.
[00:02:17] Speaker D: I mean, that's a deal.
[00:02:21] Speaker C: Some would consider it a steal if
[00:02:23] Speaker D: only it was free.
[00:02:27] Speaker C: All right, by the time we post this, August 1st will have passed.
And we all know what that means.
It is the first day that 2028s are able to be actively contacted by coaches.
And this becoming a yearly.
A yearly conversation. And I feel like we need to. We need to have our public service announcement around this date and make sure that no panic ensues, nobody's feelings get hurt.
The reality of this time is that the vast majority of kids, and I'm talking 90% of them will likely not get a phone call August 1st, and it's totally fine.
And I hope that's not what people are shooting for. And they're concerned about kind of the broader process and really focusing on development and finding the right place. But the reality is with the roster cuts, with all the stuff that's happening, this date is even slower than it was two years ago.
I can say anecdotally, I haven't talked to some coaches that the list of guys that they're calling is getting smaller and smaller every year.
So I think, simply put, if you get a call on August 1st, awesome, you still need to work. If you're one of those guys, that means you did something really good the last couple of months and caught the eye of, of likely a Division 1 school that may have some interest in you or at least is trying to better understand who you are as a, as a person and maybe lead to some, some deeper conversations about how you fit in their program.
But if you don't get a call, nothing wrong with that either. Just got to continue to work.
I think that's important for people to wrap their head on head around, in my opinion, and not to, you know, not to get worried if you don't get one of those phone calls.
[00:04:30] Speaker D: Sure.
[00:04:32] Speaker B: I'm going to really lean into Jocko tonight.
[00:04:34] Speaker D: Apparently, you know, it's like the good video, right? Like, didn't get the high speed gear. Good.
Didn't get a call on August 1st. Good. More time to work.
But there's a lot of truth to it, like there, you know, August 1st. We've built this whole thing up over the course of the last, what, two years now that we've had the August 1st deadline date of like, if I don't get a call on August 1st. But, you know, if you don't get a call, all these people, like, you know, the vast majority of kids that are going to go play Division 1 baseball are going to be getting calls well after the August 1st date and into the fall, winter and even next spring.
You know, anecdotally, not even anecdotally true. We've seen it with our own eyes with the clients that we work with. You know, the amount of guys that didn't get calls last year on August 1st that ended up being, you know, they ended up playing Division 1 baseball and committed this summer and two years ago who didn't get calls and then last summer were, you know, getting, you know, committed to Division 1 school. So you Know, the timeline has certainly slowed down, obviously, with the transfer portal and all the other things that have been going on in college baseball. You know, the window in which they're going after 28 says has shifted back from, you know, an arms race of trying to get as many guys as they possibly can get committed and keep them away from other people to, you know, now we're at 34 and we have transfer portal and, you know, we have all these other rules and full scholarships and, you know, this, that and the other thing.
They're doing their due diligence on the front end to make sure that guys are going to be the right fit athletically, academically and culturally within their program. Because if you miss on one of those 34 or two of those 34, you could be in a lot of trouble in doing so. So instead of, you know, trying to commit as many people as possible and then, you know, dumping them late, we're going to, you know, take our time, make sure that we have the right guys that we're bringing into our program so that that 34 number isn't shrunk by a handful of guys that maybe we missed on. You know, from a. Whether it's athletically or from a character perspective, you know, they're trying to mitigate that as much as possible, which means that they're probably going to go a little bit later. Now, if you're getting calls, good on you. You know, you've impressed some people and you're probably one of the better players out there and, you know, you get some phone calls, take some visits, and, you know, maybe you're committing here in the very near future. But for the overwhelming majority of guys that are going to ultimately play Division 1 baseball, you know, there's probably not going to be a whole lot of calls going on on August 1st, you know, but that doesn't mean that on August 10th or 20th or 31st, you know, you're not fielding a phone call and having some interest after going to a camp or playing in a fall ball game and they see you and they want to you.
They like what they saw and they want to at least start a rapport with you over the course of the fall to kind of see where you're at when once you come out the other side in the spring, because maybe you flash some skills that they're interested in and they want their program and, hey, let's get to know this kid and make sure that the character box and all those things check. And he's putting in the work in the off season and he's in the weight room and he's trying to get faster and bigger and stronger and we'll go see him play in the spring and you know, if he's further along than he was when we saw him in the fall, that might be someone we move on early and there's a guy that we can, you know, sign in May or June and be done with it versus, you know, pulling the trigger in November and missing a little bit more. So, you know, whether you get the phone call or not is irrelevant to where you're ultimately going to end up playing college baseball. Right. You know, you're going to have some guys that get calls that maybe don't ever play Division 1 baseball. You're going to get guys that gets no calls until next year who end up playing Division 1 baseball. You know, the goal is to, you know, continually get better and get in the weight room and get bigger, stronger, faster, improve your, your, your swing and your bat speed and your, you know, exit velo and your, you know, defense and your pitches and all the like so that when you, you get back out in the spring and get can get seen, you can be a completely different player that could level himself up.
[00:08:52] Speaker C: Well said.
I honestly don't know if I have much else to add to it. I just, I think in today's day and age with, with social media and all that, I think that this date gets blown out of proportion. And for most guys, August 1st is just another day on the calendar. And there's nothing wrong with that.
[00:09:13] Speaker B: If you're the parent of a high school baseball player with college aspirations, you already know the recruiting process can feel overwhelming. Endless showcases, non stop emails and big promises with very little clarity. That's why we recommend Diamond College Showcase Camps, the nation's premier academic baseball showcase. At Diamond College showcases, every college coach in attendance is there with a purpose to coach, instruct, evaluate and recruit. Every player is seen, every player is engaged, and every family leaves with a clear understanding of where they truly stand. This is not a mass camp. College coaches run the drills, evaluate every athlete and provide honest professional feedback that you can trust.
Diamond College Showcase camps are built for serious student athletes who value both baseball and academics. If you're looking for transparency, clarity and a recruiting experience that respects your time and your players future, Diamond College Showcase
[00:10:07] Speaker D: is the place to be.

[00:10:58] Speaker D: yeah, you know, it's nothing more than what is it Saturday?
Is that what August 1st is this year?
[00:11:06] Speaker C: I think, is that right?
[00:11:08] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, it's a, it's a Saturday.
So it's nothing more than just another regular Saturday out there.
No one's gonna be calling your phone at 12:01am Some might if we're really, really stretching it. But like what's the point of that?
[00:11:29] Speaker C: Just trying to show how much they love and coach.
[00:11:32] Speaker D: Yeah, I mean I'll be in bed like awesome. But no, it's just another regular Saturday. Like you know, if you get a phone call, awesome.
[00:11:42] Speaker B: If not, who cares?
[00:11:45] Speaker D: You know, it's, it's easy for us to say on this side of things. Right.
You know, but ultimately I would tell you that it, whether you get a phone call on August 1st or not is literally irrelevant to where you're ultimately going to end up playing college baseball because there's programs out there that aren't going to call any more than three.
You know what I mean?
[00:12:09] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:12:10] Speaker D: And the reality is, I think, I guess we should probably talk about this briefly since we've been only on here for like five minutes. Like if, if you're.
[00:12:19] Speaker C: What?
[00:12:19] Speaker D: Didn't we have this conversation the other day?
[00:12:22] Speaker A: If you're somebody who, if you're a
[00:12:23] Speaker D: mid major school that is recruiting a 91 to 94 mile an hour right hander, the likelihood of him getting to you is slim.
[00:12:35] Speaker B: So you might call him, but there's
[00:12:37] Speaker D: probably a handful of other people that are calling him that might be a little bit better.
So it's kind of a wait and see game as you go. Right.
[00:12:45] Speaker B: Like Division 3 generally waits for Division
[00:12:48] Speaker D: 1 and 2 to be done before they really start. Like, you know, really recruiting guys. It's kind of the same thing. We're at the Division 1 level. We're going to see where all these guys slot in at upper levels and then see where they like who's left. And as we start to, the attrition starts to come. Then we, we snatch up the guys that we would like. Are you Going to reach on some guys. Yeah. But I think most people have an idea of like, yeah, that right handed arm who's 95 to 97 isn't signing at Marist.
And I use our alma mater. It's not a slight on our alma mater, it's just our alma mater. That's why I use it. But my point is he's probably not going to marry.
[00:13:30] Speaker C: Yeah, I don't think. Yeah. And I don't think Lance is making that phone call either.
[00:13:33] Speaker D: No, no, no. Yeah. If the kid reaches out and says, I'm really interested and I want to be a Red Fox, we're gonna sign you up.
[00:13:40] Speaker C: Yeah. But even, but even then, like, and I know you've talked to some guys, but I've talked to some guys in the last couple weeks and asked them like, hey, where are you at with 2018? We're talking like the mid majors, right?
Like the kind of mid mid majors and then the low mid majors. Just out of curiosity, talking to some guys that we know, like, hey, what do you, like, where are you at with 28? Like, what does that look like for you? And the majority, if not all of them were, yeah, we're not really all that concerned about 28 right now. Like, we're trying to finish up our 27 class. And we've got some names, we've got some guys that we'd like, but we're not in a rush with our 28 because of exactly what you're talking about. That, that kid that they're in love with right now is probably going to have to exhaust his options at some other schools before they get to them. And that's just how it works, just how it works in this game.
[00:14:36] Speaker D: So, yeah, you know, and I've talked to a ton of coaches. I Talked to some Power 4 coaches
[00:14:43] Speaker C: that are like, yeah, that's the other thing that's probably not handful. Yeah, we got a handful of guys on the board that we really like.
[00:14:50] Speaker D: It depends, you know, we don't even know what our roster is going to look like next year. But you know, for the sure spots that we know are open that we're really trying to recruit, we have a handful of guys that we have that we're, you know, we'll, we'll will kick the tires on and reach out to
[00:15:04] Speaker C: some arms, some middle infielders. Yeah.
[00:15:07] Speaker D: And a lot of it is like, a lot of it is like, we want to get to know the kids and get them to campus in the fall when kids are on campus and you know, see how it goes. If we feel like it's a good fit, we'll see what happens. If we don't feel like it's a good fit, like we're just going to, we'll lengthen the process a little bit more because, you know, we've seen guys that were 88 to 89 in the fall that we weren't really high on be 94 to 90, you know, 93, 95 in the spring.
And it happens. So there'll be guys available.
[00:15:38] Speaker C: Yeah. And honestly, like, if I was a kid in this situation or if I'm a parent going through this right now and you do get a bunch of phone calls on August 1st and you get a bunch of offers,
[00:15:51] Speaker E: I don't
[00:15:51] Speaker C: know, my red flag goes up a little bit. Like, you don't even know me at all.
Yeah, I would much rather if I was a parent.
[00:16:02] Speaker D: You are a parent.
[00:16:03] Speaker C: It might be not quite ready still. We, we figured out how to swing with two hands today. Big step. Big step.
But as a parent, like, I would want a coach to at least have some conversations with my kid before they decide what he's worth. And I understand there's some kids out there that you saw, and we saw it all this past week at the Futures Games that are ultra, ultra talented and I'm sure people are going to be fighting over them, but most of these coaches are going to go on the route of, hey, like, we want to get you to campus or we need to have some conversations. Like, that's the one downside to this rule that I think is actually very important to understand is, yeah, there was a, as you put it, like, it was a speeding bullet of recruiting that we were on for a long time. But the one positive of that is that coaches got a chance to talk to players.
So you get to know a kid a little bit before you decide to offer him. And in today, I think a lot of coaches are going back to that style of, hey, we're going to use the month of August before we just start chucking offers out. We're going to target the guys that we really like. But you know, that is the one downfall of this is that you don't get to have those convos and everything you get is third party.
[00:17:22] Speaker D: Yes.
[00:17:23] Speaker C: And as a coach, I would be uncomfortable with offering a kid on August 1st, honestly, because I would like to see that kid face to face. I'd like to shake his hand. I'd like to meet mom and dad in person before we say, hey man, we're going to give you this type of money.
Some programs don't operate like that and that's fine. I get it. It's a wildly competitive landscape. That's just me speaking as a former coach.
I think that in person stuff's valuable, but I don't know where I'm going with that. It's a general thought while we're on the subject.
[00:17:57] Speaker D: So no, I think it's important, especially we go into 34 man rosters.
You want to get to know the kid and make sure that it's going to be the right fit. Because if it's not, you know, you could be down, you could be down a guy immediately from the portal or just down a guy who is miserable and is a drain and not a
[00:18:20] Speaker E: fountain,
[00:18:22] Speaker D: which we all want to avoid.
[00:18:25] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:18:30] Speaker D: I don't have anything else.
